🫒 Zone 3 — Olive Grove & Field Crops (~4,000m²)
25 olive trees (Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo, Pendolino). Cover crops: vetch, clover, fava beans. Chestnuts on cooler north edge. Grain/legume rotation.
🌲 Zone 4 — Managed Woodland (~2,500m²)
North/NW windbreak: Eleagnus, Italian alder, black locust, broom. Forage trees: oak, carob, mulberry. Firebreak transition. Boar-proof fence.
🌿 Zone 5 — Wild Corridor (~1,000m²)
Native Mediterranean maquis: myrtle, arbutus, heather, broom. No intervention. Wildlife corridor. Biodiversity reservoir for beneficial insects.

Chickens: 6 hens (Livorno/dual-purpose) rotated through orchard post-harvest. Stationary coop with electric netting. ~5–6 eggs/day in season.

Bees: 2–4 hives in south-facing, sheltered spot with morning sun. Near orchard for pollination. 20–60 kg honey/year.

💧 Water Strategy ✅ Complete

Four water sources provide excellent water security for the 1ha site. The system is designed around gravity-fed irrigation, with the irrigation pond at the highest point of the property. Annual rainfall on the 1ha is 8,000 m³ — even a fraction captured by swales makes the system robust.

250m² roof × 800mm × 0.85 = ~170,000L/yr. 3× 5,000L tanks (15m³ total). Gravity-fed to Zone 1. First-flush diverter.
🏞️ Irrigation Pond
200m³ at highest point. Gravity head ~10m → 0.98 bar pressure. Sealed with bentonite/liner. Doubles as firefighting reserve.
🏊 Natural Pool
15×5×1.5m = 112m³. Swimming + thermal mass + irrigation reserve. With aquatic plants for natural filtration.

Swale System

4 contour swales (~50cm deep, 1m wide) spaced at ~2.5m vertical intervals across the slope. Each swale has a berm on the downhill side where trees are planted. Swales intercept surface runoff, spread it across the slope, and recharge groundwater. Total water harvesting: hundreds of thousands of liters per year.

Gravity Drip Irrigation

Orchard and vegetable garden use on-line dripper lines with pressure compensation. Each fruit tree: 2–4 drippers at 4–8 L/h. Vegetable beds: 16mm drip tape with 30cm emitter spacing. Automated with timer (battery/solar). Summer irrigation is essential — only ~25mm rain in July.

Wildfire risk is REAL in Tuscany. The combination of hot, dry summers (Jul–Sep peak), dry Mediterranean vegetation, and the Sirocco wind from the SE creates a significant fire sector. The south-facing slope also means vegetation is drier and more combustible.

🏠 Why is the building south-facing?
The south-facing slope maximises passive solar gain (~30% more radiation than flat land), provides natural shelter from cold NW winds (Tramontana), and allows frost drainage downhill. The building's south wall is the warmest microclimate — ideal for season extension and tender plants.
🍎 Why are frost-sensitive trees on the upper slope?
Cold air is heavier than warm air — it flows downhill like water. The upper part of the slope is 2–4°C warmer on frost nights than the valley bottom. Peaches, apricots, and almonds (early bloomers) go highest.
💧 Why is the pond at the highest point?
Gravity-fed drip irrigation requires elevation head. The pond at the highest point provides ~8–10m head = 0.78 bar pressure — sufficient for drip irrigation without pumps. This is a permanent energy-free solution.
🌊 Why 4 swales, not more?
4 swales at ~7m vertical intervals on a 10% slope (total ~100m length) provide adequate water harvesting for the 1ha site. More swales would over-engineer the system; fewer would miss the water-spreading benefit. Each swale captures ~50–200L per meter.
🔥 Why the SE firebreak?
The Sirocco wind from the SE (135°) is the primary fire risk vector — hot, dry, and carries embers. The firebreak + pond on the SE side creates a defensible space. The irrigated vegetable garden on the south side acts as an additional green firebreak.
🌳 Why 13 tree guilds with 3-ring structure?
The 3-ring structure (inner/mid/outer) creates a self-regulating ecosystem around each tree. Inner ring: mineral accumulation + pest repellent. Mid ring: N-fixation + ground cover. Outer ring: edge habitat + pollination. This reduces maintenance by 60–80% vs. conventional orchard.
🥬 Why no-dig raised beds?
No-dig preserves soil structure, fungal networks, and earthworm populations. 30cm of organic topsoil is sufficient for deep-rooted vegetables. Raised beds warm faster in spring, improve drainage on silty-sand, and provide clear paths for maintenance.
🐝 Why chickens AND bees?
Chickens provide pest control, fertilization, and egg production. Bees provide pollination (critical for 90% of fruit trees) and honey. Together they create a closed-loop system: chickens eat pests, bees pollinate crops, manure feeds plants.
🌿 Why Zone 2b forest garden?
The 7-layer forest garden (15 species) maximises vertical space on the slope, creating diverse microclimates. The SE firebreak transition zone doubles as a productive edge. 4 swales on contour provide water to the entire system without irrigation.
📐 Why Tuscan heritage varieties?
Tuscan cultivars (Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo, Pendolino for olives; Brogiotto Nero for figs; Cavolo Nero for kale) are proven over centuries of local adaptation. They have better disease resistance, drought tolerance, and flavour than imported varieties.
