The site's south-facing slope at ~300m altitude in Tuscany creates a unique set of sector influences. 9 sectors — 6 directional and 3 topographical — define the design constraints and opportunities. The south-facing aspect is the dominant advantage: maximum solar gain, natural shelter from cold north winds, and excellent frost drainage.

Key takeaway: The south-facing slope is the single most important asset — it maximizes solar gain, provides natural frost drainage, and shelters the site from cold NW winds. The SE (Sirocco) wind is the primary risk vector, driving both fire danger and desiccation.
Zones are arranged from the building (Zone 0) outward, following the south-facing slope. The warmest, most accessible areas closest to the house host the most intensive production. Outer zones transition to managed woodland, firebreak, and wild corridors.
Chickens: 6 hens (Livorno/dual-purpose) rotated through orchard post-harvest. Stationary coop with electric netting. ~5–6 eggs/day in season.
Bees: 2–4 hives in south-facing, sheltered spot with morning sun. Near orchard for pollination. 20–60 kg honey/year.
Four water sources provide excellent water security for the 1ha site. The system is designed around gravity-fed irrigation, with the irrigation pond at the highest point of the property. Annual rainfall on the 1ha is 8,000 m³ — even a fraction captured by swales makes the system robust.
4 contour swales (~50cm deep, 1m wide) spaced at ~2.5m vertical intervals across the slope. Each swale has a berm on the downhill side where trees are planted. Swales intercept surface runoff, spread it across the slope, and recharge groundwater. Total water harvesting: hundreds of thousands of liters per year.
Orchard and vegetable garden use on-line dripper lines with pressure compensation. Each fruit tree: 2–4 drippers at 4–8 L/h. Vegetable beds: 16mm drip tape with 30cm emitter spacing. Automated with timer (battery/solar). Summer irrigation is essential — only ~25mm rain in July.

13 tree guilds form the backbone of the orchard, each with a 3-ring structure: inner (support/companion), mid (guild-specific), and outer (canopy/edge). The guild system creates self-regulating, low-maintenance ecosystems around each tree.

15 species across 7 layers (canopy, sub-canopy, shrub, herb, ground cover, climber, root) with 4 swales on contour. SE firebreak creates a transition zone. The 7-layer design maximizes vertical space and creates diverse microclimates.
Wildfire risk is REAL in Tuscany. The combination of hot, dry summers (Jul–Sep peak), dry Mediterranean vegetation, and the Sirocco wind from the SE creates a significant fire sector. The south-facing slope also means vegetation is drier and more combustible.
Three-year phased implementation prioritising infrastructure first (water, access, fire safety), then production systems (orchard, guilds), then maturation and fine-tuning.
